And We're Back!
Howdy!
Man, what a turn out we’ve had on the website! It probably helps that we are making all of our guests of the wedding to visit to RSVP. Sorry we've been gone fore so long, our time has been dedicated to wedding planning and camper building! But we wanted to give everyone an update on how the camper build is coming along. Welp! It FINALLY looks like a camper. The bottom has been coated with a boat-grade paint to protect the integrity of the wood. We have epoxied and hand-sanded the ENTIRE camper a few times. Sanding is officially our least favorite process, but we can definitely say our blood, sweat, and tears have gone into our honeymoon camper after the past couple of months!
Next, we assembled the trailer the camper sits on with the help of the Hardt men when everyone was in Denver. Once that was stable, we flipped the camper from resting on the top (where the top fan will go) to the upright position. Putting the camper on the trailer has been the most satisfying part so far, at least for me. It shows the hard work Brett and I have put in. The long nights of huddling by the heater in the winter and the insanely hot days of sanding all added up to this thing that we made from some pages in a book and pieces of wood.
We will be doing the final coat of green paint on the side strip and then varnishing the hell out of it. A coat of varnish then sand (again…) five times over. FIVE MORE TIMES we have to sand the whole camper! And we will get this all done in a month. I’d say it is a done deal. Friends- I’ll see you in our garage if you need me!
We will also be installing solar panels (woo!) as a source of electricity. Why do we need electricity for camping? Well a few things! One, to run the top fan and mushroom vents for ventilation. Two, for all our battery powered gadgets! Don’t you want to hear from us during our trip!? Well good. Because we will try to keep you updated and internet connection is available. Thanks to Brett picking up the Paice family trade (a future electrician on our hands?), we will be living in luxury in the middle of the forest!
Reflecting on the journey so far, I can’t help but think of Brett and his ability to come up with an idea and see it through. He has passion and lives life like nothing is stopping him… because there really isn’t anything stopping any of us but ourselves. If you’re thinking about building your own camper or building out a van, the best piece of advice I can give is to just go for it. Yes, there is planning involved and resources, but if you want it to happen, you have to start doing something. That is one of the most valuable lessons Brett has taught me. And to be fearless in those decisions, because he will always be by my side when they turn out amazing or when they fail epically.
We still have LOTS to do, but generally, things are going great! Brett and I (with the help of our family!) are planning the wedding and it is getting close! We are so so so excited to celebrate our love and promises to each other with our family and friends.
A big shout out to every single person who has helped plan the big day. We appreciate all of the hard work you’ve all put in. We couldn’t do it without ya! See you all very soon.
With love (and coffee),
-Kalah
